Currently the money collected will go toward giving a graduating senior a $3,000 scholarship each year.

THE NEW GOAL is to reach $100,000 per year for the next 5 years for two reasons. (1) To increase the annual scholarship to a new total of $10,000 beginning 2024 and (2) Set up an endowment to continue this scholarship every year in perpetuity.  The Los Alamos High School Alumni can make a REAL difference in the continuing education of a graduating senior each year from here on out and with your help we can easily make this happen!!

INFORMATION REGARDING THE LAHS ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP:                                                                                              

The Los Alamos Alumni Association was formed in 1990, Incoporated in 2002 and became a 501(3)c Non-profit Organization in 2007 for the purpose of providing a Scholarship to graduating Seniors of Los Alamos High School.   The Scholarship was named "The Los Alamos High School Scholarship in Memory of Shirley Fries," who was a beloved high school teacher for many years.  

The first Scholarship of $500 was awarded in 1993 and through the years has increased as donations and money earned from the 5 Year Reunions have allowed.  In 2019 The Alumni Scholarship Committee was excited to be able to offer two Seniors a $3,000 scholarship each.  This was possible because several Classes who have had their 50 year reunions in the last few years had money left over and donated those monies to the Scholarship fund.  As of 2023 the Scholarship has been able to give out $59,000 to help one or more graduating Seniors each year.

From the beginning it has been the passion of several LAHS graduates to help a graduating Senior each year who not only shows a monetary need but who has shown their own passion for helping others, volunteering and participating in high school events and who, perhaps, still has energy to have a job earning money to further help themselves. 

MAKE NO MISTAKE: 

THERE IS A REAL NEED FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP IN LOS ALAMOS

Many Seniors have no family help in going to college, they are on their own to find the money and to move forward with their lives.  Having reviewed the applications from Seniors asking for help the Committee is amazed at the need for scholarships.  It is the Alumni Scholarship Committees hope that this website will be able to help ALL Alumni realize the need and inspire them to help those classmates that follow us.  I think it's important to say that not everyone in Los Alamos has money and many parents are not able to help their Seniors go to college. 

THE ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE ASKS FOR YOUR HELP TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE A LAHS GRADUATING SENIOR(s) WITH FUNDS TO HELP THEM IN ANYWAY THAT THEY NEED.  WHETHER THEY WANT TO ATTEND A COLLEGE OR GO TO A VOCATIONAL SCHOOL WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO HELP.  ISN'T THAT THE ALUMNI'S LEGACY AFTER ALL?
